Fireworks and noise sensitivity

A lot of dog owners have an awful time during autumn/winter with firework season and new years eve and fireworks. It's very unpleasant seeing our pets stressed out by the whizz and bangs of fireworks. There are some dogs that have this difficulty all year with the same sensitivity but to other loud noises. Some dogs can develop this in older age also so this can creep up on some owners. There are numerous products on the market, supplements and jackets that are to promote calmness etc. I do feel a little skeptical with these, are the dogs awake and aware of what is going on but unable to react giving the owner a false sense of accomplishment? Being unprepared is also a human downfall. What can be done? instead of waiting for bonfire night, perhaps start the desensitisation earlier in the year. Firework displays are available on Youtube. These can be played on your phone or tv quietly which you are feeding or playing with your dog in the other room. The volume can be increased if the dog is putting happy associations with it and coping. This can be built up over time (hence being prepared and starting early in the year). The lates trend is headphones for your dog to prevent the sounds. This avoidance method could work well but..... the dog being happy wearing the headphones, needs to be trained, well in advance so needing to be prepared comes to the fore again. As with most things, each dog may require a different approach or trying a few methods before finding one that works but all methods require the same thing from the owner...... being prepared.
